5 best summer boating events in Australia

The Australian summer sailing calendar is jam-packed with events for boaties of all ages and boating passions. We’ve taken time out to list our top 5 faves – from the infamous Sydney to Hobart to the Aussie Laser Championships.

  1. Australian Youth Championships

The Australian Youth Championships happen between January 10 and 14 next year. Adelaide Sailing Club will play host to the event, which showcases some of the best and brightest sailing talent from around Australia. Competitors from New Zealand and Japan will also be taking part as part of an exchange program.

  1. Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

The most iconic yacht race in Australia celebrates it 72nd year on Boxing Day. Organisers have already closed entries for this one, with 100 yachts signing up. 2015 winner Paul Clitheroe returns to defend his title, as well as the first ever entry from Korea. The 628 nautical mile race traverses notoriously treacherous waters.

  1. Catamaran Championships

The McCrae Catamaran Championships run from November 26 to 27 in Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. This year, the event takes in the Victorian Catamaran Championships too. Any ‘off the beach’ catamaran class is able to enter the event, however they do need a Yachting Victoria yardstick. If you don’t have one, you’re still able to enter, but cannot claim a prize.

  1. Sailing World Cup Final

St Kilda Sailing Precinct is the last of 6 stops on the Sailing World Cup Circuit. The Australian leg kicks off between December 4 and 11, and features the world’s best sailors. Melbourne is considered to be the most important stage of the event, as aspiring young sailors are able to compete alongside the best of the best.

  1. Australian Laser Championships

On the back of Australia’s success at Rio, laser sailors are now gearing up for the Laser Nationals, which happen between December 27 and January 4 at the Adelaide Sailing Club. Both men and women compete in the event, with competitors ranging from 13 to 70 years. Olympian Matthew Wearn has already registered for the event.
