5 celebrities you didn’t know sailed

Even famous folk agree that sailing is one of the best things on Earth. So, it’s no surprise that a whole host of celebrities love hitting the water when they get the time.

We decided to delve into those who enjoy boating, just as much as acting, singing or making us laugh. Here’s who made the cut!

  1. Jerry Seinfeld

The guy who made his fortune from a show about nothing is also a big boat lover. Yep, when he’s not riding with Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, you’ll find him hanging on his super yacht, Moka.

Moka has a whole lot of cool toys on board, including speedboats, 29-foot fishing boats, tenders and diving equipment. There’s also a gym, just in case you feel the need to work out. For a laugh, check out this video of Jerry attempting to launch a Boston Whaler with Jimmy Fallon.

  1. Nicole Kidman

One of Australia’s favourite exports also loves to kick back on Hokulani, a 45.97 metre luxury motor yacht by American yacht builder, Palmer Johnson. The 2007 model features twin MTU 4000 engines, plus 3,650 hp, which allows the yacht to hit speeds of 29 knots.

You might also remember Dead Calm, the Phillip Noyce classic about a couple honeymooning on a boat, who are terrorised by an unexpected visitor. Kidman plays Rae, who must outwit the sinister Hughie (played creepily well by Billy Zane). Watch it and wonder how Kidman can get back on a boat.

  1. Morgan Freeman

Everyone’s favourite voice over artist (and actor) is also a keen sailor from way back. Freeman began sailing in 1967, when he visited Stowe, Vermont with a friend. The pair wanted to go horse riding but there was only one horse.

So, they decided to sail instead – from that moment on Freeman was hooked. He speaks about his sailing journey on Oprah’s Master Class.

“I was always fascinated by the sea,” he said.
“I’m bookish, I read a lot, and one of the greatest books I read was Moby Dick.”

Hear Freeman tell his sailing story here.

  1. Grace Kelly

The former Hollywood actress turned Princess of Monaco was also a great sailor. Kelly made it look effortless, sailing the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador on her honeymoon in 1956 with her husband, Prince Ranier III of Monaco.

Kelly often sailed the waters of her home in Monaco, which even now, is famed for its luxury yachts and lifestyle. Her beautiful yacht has since been purchased, refurbished and renamed M/Y Grace Kelly, and can be chartered in the Galapagos.

  1. Albert Einstein

Okay, Einstein isn’t a contemporary celebrity, but he’s obviously a very amazing human being who achieved greatness (and humility) in his chosen passions. One of these passions was sailing. Yep, Einstein loved to sail.

Many who knew him well say Einstein was happiest cruising on his much-loved yachts – Tummler and Tinef. What you may not know is that he wasn’t very good at sailing. In fact, he frequently crashed into docks and ran aground. But, he didn’t care, he simply loved to sail.
